Pablo Neruda (1904-1973)

Awarded the Prize “for a poetry that with the action of an elemental force brings alive a continent’s destiny dreams.”

Chilean poet. Neruda was born on July 12, 1904 at Parral, Chile. He studied French pedagogy at the University of Chile in Santiago. Between 1927 1935, the government put him in charge of a number of honorary consulships, which took him to Burma, Ceylon, Java, Singapore, Buenos Aires, Barcelona, Madrid. During 1949 to 1952 he went into political exile abroad. In 1971, he was appointed Ambassador to France. Neruda died in Santiago on September 23, 1973.
