
Eyvind Johnson (1900-1976)
Awarded the Prize “for a narrative art, far-seeing in ls ages, in the service of freedom.”Swedish writer. Johnson was born on July 29, 1900 at Saltsjobaden in Norrbotten, Sweden. In his grim childhood, he did many different kinds of hard work as timberman, sawmill worker, ticket seller usher at a cinema, projectionist, assistant to plumbers electricians, locomotive cleaner hay-presser. He taught himself reading. His first book was finished in the spring of 1924. He was elected a member of the Swedish Academy in 1957. Johnson died in Stockholm on August 25, 1976.
