Eugenio Montale (1896-1981)

Awarded the Prize “for his distinctive poetry which, with great artistic sensitivity, has interpreted human values under the sign of an outlook on life with no illusions.”

Italian poet, prose writer, editor, translator. Montale was born on October 12, 1896 in Genoa, Italy. His formal education was not completed for ill health. In 1923, he aboned his operatic hopes, started his literary career by writing for several publications. His first collection of poetry was published in 1925. He once held the post of Director of the Gabinetto Vieusseux Library in Florence. Montale died on September 12, 1981 in Milan.
