Vicente Aleixre (1898-1984)

Awarded the Prize “for a creative poetic writing which illuminates man’s condition in the cosmos in present-day society, at the same time representing the great renewal of the traditions of Spanish poetry between the wars.”

Spanish poet. Aleixre was born in Sevilla, Spain on April 26, 1898. He studied law at the University of Madrid at the Madrid School of Economics. From 1920 to 1922 he taught commercial law. Beginning in 1925 he has completely devoted himself to literature. His first book of poems appeared in 1928. In 1949 he was elected to the Spanish Royal Academy. Aleixre died on December 16, 1984 in Madrid.
