Isaac Bashevis Singer (1904-1991)

Awarded the Prize “for his impassioned narrative art which, with roots in a Polish-Jewish cultural tradition, brings universal human conditions to life.”

American writer. Singer was born at Radzymin, Pol on July 14, 1904. He received traditional Jewish education became acquainted with Jewish law in Hebrew Aramaic texts. In 1920 he entered the Tachkemoni Rabbinical Seminary. He moved in 1935 to the United States settled in New York, where he worked for a Yiddish-language newspaper. In 1943 he became an American citizen. His first novel was published in 1932. Singer died on July 24, 1991 at Surfside, Florida.
