Wole Soyinka (1934- )

Awarded the Prize “for who in a wide cultural perspective with poetic overtones fashions the drama of existence.”
Nigerian dramatist, poet novelist. Soyinka was born on July 13, 1934 at Abeokuta, Nigeria. After studies at Government College in Ibadan, he continued at the University of Leeds, where, in 1973, he took his honorary Ph.D. He was a dramatist at the Royal Court Theatre in London. In 1960, he was awarded a Rockefeller bursary returned to Nigeria, teaching drama literature at various universities in Ibadan, Lagos, Ife, where, since 1975, he has been a professor of comparative literature. He is a visiting professor at the universities of Cambridge, Sheffield, Yale in 1986 became a Fellow at Cornell.
