Camilo José Cela (1916-2002)
Awarded the Prize “for a rich intensive prose, which with restrained compassion forms a challenging vision of man’s vulnerability.”Spainish writer. Cela was born on May 11, 1916 in Galicia, Spain. He studied law at the University of Madrid served as a corporal with Franco’s army during the Spanish Civil War. After the war, Cela resumed his studies, finally graduating at age 27. In 1957 he became a member of the Spanish Academy. In 1977 he was designated a senator by the monarchy. He died on January 17, 2002 in Madrid, Spain.
