Dario Fo (1926-2016)
Awarded the Prize “for who emulates the jesters of the Middle Ages in scourging authority and upholding the dignity of the downtrodden.”Italian playwright and actor. Fo was born in San Giano, a small town near Milan on March 24, 1926. He studied at the Brera Art Academy and the Polytechnic. He later worked at the Italian national radio and television networks. In 1959 Fo founded with his wife, the actress Franca Rame, the Compagnia Dario Fo-Franca Rame, which produced number of popular satirical dramas. In 1968 Dario Fo and Franca Rame founded the acting group Nuova Scena. In 1970 Fo started their third major theatre group, Colletivo Teatrale La Comune. From the 1970s Fo had worked mainly at the Palazzina Liberty in Milano. Fo died on October 13,2016 in Milano, Italy.
