José Saramago (1922-2010)
Awarded the Prize “for who with parables sustained by imagination, compassion irony continually enables us once again to apprehend an elusory reality.”Portuguese writer. Saramago was born in Azinhaga, in the province of Ribatejo, Portugal on November 16, 1922. He was forced to abon school in order to earn his living. He held a number of manual jobs. In 1970s Saramago supported himself mostly by translation works, since 1979 he devoted himself entirely to writing. His first novel appeared in 1947. Saramago died on 18 June, 2010 in Lanzarote, Spain.
