Tomas Tranströmer (1931-2015)

Awarded the Prize “because he gives us fresh access to reality through his condensed translucent images.”

Swedish poet, psychologist translator. Tranströmer was born on 15 April 1931 in Stockholm, Sweden. He graduated from Stockholm University majored in Psychology. Tranströmer is acclaimed as one of the most important Scinavian writers since the Second World War. Critics praised his poetry for its accessibility, even in translation. His poetry has been translated into over 60 languages. He was the recipient of the 1990 Neustadt International Prize for Literature. Tranströmer died on 26 March 2015 in Stockholm, Sweden.
