
Cecil Frank Powell (1903-1969)
Awarded the Prize “for his development of the photographic method of studying nuclear processes his discoveries regarding mesons made with this method.”British physicist. Powell was born at Tonbridge, Kent on December 5, 1903. He was educated at Cambridge University worked in the Cavendish Laboratory, obtained his Ph.D. in 1928. He was Willis Professor of Physics of Bristol University director of the Willis Physics Laboratory. From 1961, he served on the Scientific Policy Committee of the European Organization for Nuclear Research. He was a member of the Royal Society in London. Powell died in Bellano, Italy on August 9, 1969.
