Felix Bloch (1905-1983)

Awarded the Prize “for his development of new methods for nuclear magnetic precision measurements discoveries in connection therewith.”

American physicist. Bloch was born in Zurich, Switzerl on October 23, 1905. He was educated at the Federal Institute of Technology at the University of Leipzig where he obtained his Ph.D. in 1928. He taught briefly in Germany in 1933 moved to America was naturalized in 1939. In 1934 he joined the Stanford staff, remaining there until his retirement in 1971 serving from 1936 onward as professor of physics. He also served as the Director of the International Laboratory for High-Energy Physics in Geneva. He was President of American Physical Society a member of the National Academy of Sciences. Bloch died on September 10, 1983 in Zurich.
