
Edward Mills Purcell (1912-1997)
Awarded the Prize “for his development of new methods for nuclear magnetic precision measurements discoveries in connection therewith.”American physicist. Purcell was born at Taylorville, Illinois on August 30, 1912. He gained his B.Sc. degree in electrical engineering at Purdue University in 1933 his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1938. He became Gerhard Gade University Professor of Physics in 1949 at Harvard University. He was a Fellow of the American Physical Society, a member of the National Academy of Sciences, of the American Academy of Arts Sciences. Purcell died on March 7, 1997, Cambridge, Massachusetts.
