Melvin Calvin (1911-1997)

Awarded the Prize “for his research on the carbon dioxide assimilation in plants.”

American chemist biochemist. Calvin was born in St. Paul, Minnesota on April 8, 1911. He studied chemistry at the Michigan College of Mining Technology gained his B.S. degree in 1931. After obtaining his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in 1935 he spent two years at Manchester. He began a long association with the University of California at Berkeley in 1937. From 1941 to 1945 he worked on the Manhattan Project. Calvin died in Berkeley on January 8, 1997.
