Robert Burns Woodward (1917-1979)

Awarded the Prize “for his outsting achievements in the art of organic synthesis.”

American chemist. Woodward was born in Boston, Massachusetts on April 10, 1917. He was educated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, obtaining his Ph.D. in 1937. His whole career was spent at Harvard where, starting as a postdoctoral fellow in 1937, he became Morris Loeb Professor of Chemistry in 1953. Woodward died on July 8, 1979 at Cambridge, Massachusetts.
