
Luis F. Leloir (1906-1987)
Awarded the Prize “for his discovery of sugar nucleotides their role in the biosynthesis of carbohydrates.”Argentinian biochemist. Leloir was born in Paris on September 6, 1906. He was educated at Buenos Aires University, obtaining his M.D. in 1932. He spent a year in Cambridge, Engl, returning to Argentina to work at the Institute of Physiology until 1944. In 1945 he worked at the Institute of Biology Experimental Medicine. He was Professor in the Faculty of Sciences, University of Buenos Aires. He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences, American Academy of Arts Sciences. Leloir died in Buenos Aires of Argentina on December 2, 1987.
