
William H. Stein (1911-1980)
Awarded the Prize “for his contribution to the understing of the connection between chemical structure catalytic activity of the active centre of the ribonuclease molecule.”American biochemist. Stein was born on June 25, 1911 in New York City. He received his Ph.D. degree from the Columbia College in 1938. In that year he joined the staff of the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research. He was promoted to professorship there in 1954. He was a member of National Academy of Sciences, American Academy of Arts Sciences, American Society of Biological Chemists, Biochemical Society of London. Stein died on February 2, 1980 in New York City.
