Geoffrey Wilkinson (1921-1996)

Awarded the Prize “for his pioneering work, performed independently, on the chemistry of the organometallic, so called swich compounds.”

British chemist. Wilkinson was born in Todmorden in Yorkshire on July 14, 1921. He was educated at Imperial College, London; after working in North America on the development of the atomic bomb, he finally obtained his Ph.D. in 1946. He later worked at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology at Harvard University, before being elected to Chair of Inorganic Chemistry at Imperial College in 1956. Wilkinson died on September 26, 1996 in London, Engl.
