Peter Dennis Mitchell (1920-1992)

Awarded the Prize “for his contribution to the understing of biological energy transfer through the formulation of the chemiosmotic theory.”

British biochemist. Mitchell was born in Mitcham, Engl on September 29, 1920. He was educated at Queens College, at Jesus College. He received his Ph.D. in 1950. He held the post of Demonstrator at the Department of Biochemistry, Cambridge from 1950 to 1955. In 1955 he was invited to set up direct the Chemical Biology Unit, in the Department of Zoology, Edinburgh University, where he was appointed to a Senior Lectureship in 1961, to Readership in 1962. He was a Fellowship of the Royal Society. Mitchell died on April 10, 1992 in Bodmin, Cornwall of the United Kindom.
