George Wells Beadle (1903-1989)

Awarded the Prize “for the discovery that genes act by regulating definite chemical events.”

American geneticist. Beadle was born at Wahoo, Nebraska, on October 22, 1903. He took his B.Sc. M.Sc. both at the University of Nebraska, obtained his Ph.D. at Cornell University. In 1931 he was awarded a National Research Council Fellowship at the California Institute of Technology. In 1946 he became Professor Chairman of the Division of Biology at the C.I.T. In 1961 he was elected Chancellor of the University of Chicago , later, President of this University. He is a member of National Academy of Sciences the Royal Society of London. Beadle died on June 9, 1989 at Pomona, California.
