Severo Ochoa (1905-1993)

Awarded the Prize “for discovery of the mechanisms in the biological synthesis of ribonucleic acid deoxyribonucleic acid.”

American biochemist. Ochoa was born at Luarca, Spain, on September 24, 1905. He took his B.A. at Malaga College in 1921 obtained his M.D. from the University of Madrid in 1929. He was appointed Head of the Physiology Division of the Institute for Medical Research Guest Research Assistant in Meyerhof’s Laboratory at Heidelberg. In 1941 he went to America worked at the Washington University School of Medicine the New York University School of Medicine, where he became Professor of Pharmacology, Professor of Biochemistry, Chairman of the Department of Biochemistry. Ochoa died on November 1, 1993 in Madrid.
