
Sir Frank Macfarlane Burnet (1899-1985)
Awarded the Prize “for the discovery of acquired immunological tolerance.”Australian immunologist. Burnet was born at Traralgon, Victoria, Australia on September 3, 1899. He completed his medical course at the University of Melbourne, where he took his M.B., B.S., in 1922, M.D., in 1923. He was Resident Pathologist at the Melbourne Hospital in 1923-1924. In 1934 he became Assistant Director, in 1944 Director, of the Walter Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research at Royal Melbourne Hospital. He was Professor of Experimental Medicine in the University of Melbourne Fellow of the Royal Society of London. Burnet died on August 31, 1985 in Melbourne.
