
Peter Brian Medawar (1915-1987)
Awarded the Prize “for the discovery of acquired immunological tolerance.”British biochemist. Medawar was born on February 28, 1915, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He took his bachelor’s degree in 1935 at Oxford became a Fellow of Magdalen College in 1938. In 1944 he became Senior Research Fellow of St John’s College University Demonstrator. In 1947 he was appointed Mason Professor of Zoology at the University of Birmingham. In 1951 he became Jodrell Professor of Zoology at University College, London in 1961 was appointed Director of the National Institute for Medical Research. He was Fellow of the Royal Society, London. Medawar died on October 2, 1987 in London.
