
Konrad Bloch (1912-2000)
Awarded the Prize “for the discoveries concerning the mechanism regulation of the cholesterol fatty acid metabolism.”American biochemist. Bloch was born on January 21, 1912 in Neisse (now Nysa in Pol). He was educated at the Technical University, Munich immigrated to the United States in 1936. He obtained his Ph.D. at Columbia University in 1938. He taught at Columbia, then moved to the University of Chicago, becoming professor in 1950. In 1954 Bloch accepted the position of Higgins Professor of Biochemistry in the Department of Chemistry, Harvard University, becoming Chairman of the Department. He was President of the American Society of Biological Chemists. Bloch died on October 15, 2000 at Burlington, Massachusetts.
