André Lwoff (1902-1994)

Awarded the Prize “for the discoveries concerning genetic control of enzyme and virus synthesis.”

French microbiologist. Lwoff was born on May 8, 1902 at Allier, France. He obtained his M.D. in 1927 his Ph.D. in 1932 at Institut Pasteur. He was appointed Head of the Department at the Institut Pasteur in 1938, Professor of Microbiology at the Science Faculty in Paris in 1959. From 1959 to 1968 he was also a professor of microbiology at the Sorbonne in Paris. In 1968, he served as director of the Cancer Research Institute. He was President of the International Association of Microbiological Societies. Lwoff died on September 30, 1994 in Paris.
