
Jacques Monod (1910-1976)
Awarded the Prize “for the discoveries concerning genetic control of enzyme and virus synthesis.”French biologist. Monod was born on February 9, 1910 in Paris. He obtained his science degree in 1931, his doctorate in Natural Sciences in 1941 at the University of Paris. He joined the Institut Pasteur in 1936, was made Director of the Cell Biochemistry Department in 1954. In 1959 he was appointed Professor of the Chemistry of Metabolism at the Sorbonne. In 1967 he became Professor at the Collége de France, in 1971 he was appointed Director of the Institut Pasteur. Monod died on May 31, 1976 at Cannes.
