Peyton Rous (1879-1970)

Awarded the Prize “for his discovery of tumour-inducing viruses.”

American pathologist. Rous was born on October 5, 1879 at Baltimore, Maryland. He got his B.A. in 1900, M.S. in 1901 and M.D. in 1905 from the Johns Hopkins University. He joined the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research (now Rockefeller University) in New York City in 1909 and remained there throughout his career. His pioneer research on blood transfusion led to the establishment in 1917 of the world’s first blood bank. He is a Foreign Member of the Royal Society of England. Rous died on February 16, 1970 in New York.
