Robert W. Holley (1922-1993)

Awarded the Prize “for the interpretation of the genetic code its function in protein synthesis.”

American biochemist. Holley was born on January 28, 1922 at Urbana, Illinois. He studied chemistry at the University of Illinois received his B.A. degree in 1942. In 1947 he was awarded Ph.D. at Cornell University. He was professor at Cornell University. From 1966-1967, he was at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies the Scripps Clinic Research Foundation in La Jolla, California. In 1968, he joined the permanent staff of the Salk Institute, where he was a Resident Fellow an American Cancer Society Professor of Molecular Biology. He was also an Adjunct Professor at the University of California at San Diego. Holley died on February 11, 1993 at Los Gatos, California.
