François Jacob (1920-2013)

Awarded the Prize “for the discoveries concerning genetic control of enzyme and virus synthesis.”

French biochemist. Jacob was born on June 17, 1920 at Nancy, France. He obtained his science degree in 1951, and then his doctorate in science in 1954 at the Sorbonne. In 1950, Fran?ois Jacob joined the Institut Pasteur, and was appointed Laboratory Director in 1956, then in 1960, Head of the Department of Cell Genetics. In 1964 he was appointed Professor at the Collége de France. He was a foreign member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences of the United States and the American Philosophical Society. Jacob died on April 19, 2013.
