George E. Palade (1912-2008)

Awarded the Prize “for discoveries concerning the structural functional organization of the cell.”

American cell biologist. Palade was born on November 19, 1912 at Iasi, Romania. He received his M.D. at the University of Bucharest in 1940 taught there after graduation. He came to the United States in 1946 began work at the Rockfeller Institute in New York. In 1973, he joined the Medical School, Yale University. He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences. Palade died on October 7, 2008 in Del Mar, California.
