
Baruch S. Blumberg (1925-2011)
Awarded the Prize “for his discoveries concerning new mechanisms for the origin dissemination of infectious diseases.”American physician. Blumberg was born on July 28, 1925 in New York. He graduated from the Union College in New York in 1946 received his M.D. degree from Columbia University’s College of Physicians Surgeons his Ph.D. degree in biochemistry from Oxford University in 1957. He became a member of the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia in 1964, held the rank of University Professor of Medicine Anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania starting in 1977. Concurrently, he was Master of Balliol College from 1989 to 1994. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts Sciences in 1994. Blumberg died on April 5, 2011 in Moffett Field, California.
