
Daniel Nathans (1928-1999)
Awarded the Prize “for the discovery of restriction enzymes their application to problems of molecular genetics.”American microbiologist. Nathans was born on October 30, 1928 at Wilmington, Delaware. He was educated at the University of Delaware Washington University in St. Louis, where he was awarded M.D. in 1954. He became Professor of Microbiology at Johns Hopkins University in 1962, becoming Director of Department of Microbiology in 1972. He was a Fellow of American Academy of Arts Sciences. Nathans died on November 16, 1999 at Baltimore.
