Godfrey N. Hounsfield (1919-2004)

Awarded the Prize “for the development of computer assisted tomography.”

British electrical engineer. Hounsfield was born on August 28, 1919 in Newark, Engl. He became interested in aeroplanes studied hard radio mechanics when he was in RAF. He was taken on as a Radar Mechanic Instructor after sitting a trade test moved to the Royal College of Science in South Kensington later to Cranwell Radar School. At Cranwell, in his spare time, he passed the City Guilds Examination in Radio Communications. He joined the staff of Electric Musical Industries in 1951 then transferred to EMI Central Research Laboratories. Hounsfield died on August 12, 2004 in Kingston, Engl.
