
George D. Snell (1903-1996)
Awarded the Prize “for his discoveries concerning genetically determined structures on the cell surface that regulate immunological reactions.”American immunogeneticist. Snell was born on December 13, 1903 at Bradford, Massachusetts. After graduating from Darmouth College in 1922, he went to Harvard as a graduate student, took his Ph.D. in 1930. In 1935 he joined the Jackson Laboratory, becoming senior staff scientist in 1957. He was a member of the National Academy of Science, USA, the American Academy of Arts Sciences. Snell died on June 6, 1996 at Bar Harbor, Maine.
