Niels K. Jerne (1911-1994)

Awarded the Prize “for theories concerning the specificity in development control of the immune system the discovery of the principle for production of monoclonal antibodies.”

Danish immunologist. Jerne was born on December 23, 1911 in London. He received his Ph.D. at the University of Copenhagen in 1951. In 1962 he was appointed Professor of Biophysics at the University of Geneva Professor of Microbiology Chairman of the Department at the University of Pittsburgh. From 1969 to 1980 he was Director of the Basel Institute for Immunology, Basel. Jerne was died on October 7, 1994 at Castillon-du-Gard, France.
