César Milstein (1927-2002)

Awarded the Prize “for theories concerning the specificity in development control of the immune system the discovery of the principle for production of monoclonal antibodies.”

Argentinian biochemist. Milstein was born on October 8, 1927 in Bahia Blanca, Argentina. In 1952 he graduated from Universidad de Buenos Aires in 1957 as Doctor en Quimica. In 1960 he gained his Ph.D. degree from University of Cambridge (U.K.). He was head of Division de Biologia Molecular, Insituto Nacional de Microbiologia, Buenos Aires (1961-1963) Deputy Director of the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge (1988-1995). Milstein died on March 24, 2002 in Cambridge, Engl.
