Rita Levi-Montalcini (1909-2012)

Awarded the Prize “for her discoveries of growth factors.”

Italian cell biologist. Levi-Montalcini was born in Turin on April 22, 1909. She was educated at the University of Turin. She was the professor of the Washington University at St. Louis. In 1962, she established a research unit in Rome. From 1969 to 1978 she also held the position of Director of the Institute of Cell Biology of the Italian National Council of Research, in Rome. Levi-Montalcini died on December 30, 2012 in Rome.
