Susumu Tonegawa (1939- )

Awarded the Prize “for his discovery of the genetic principle for generation of antibody diversity.”

Japanese molecular biologist. Tonegawa was born on September 5, 1939 at Nagoya, Japan. He earned his B.S. degree from Kyoto University in 1963 his Ph.D. in molecular biology from the University of California at San Diego in 1978. He once worked at Basel Institute for Immunology in 1981 he took a professorship at the Center for Cancer Research at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
