Sir James W. Black (1924-2010)
Awarded the Prize “for his discoveries of important principles for drug treatment.”British pharmacologist. Black was born on June 14, 1924 at Uddingston, Scotl. He earned his medical degree from the University of St. Andrews in Scotl in 1946. After a number of academic posts, he joined ICI as a pharmacologist from 1958 to 1964. In 1973 he became the professor of pharmacology at University College, London. In 1978, he joined Wellcome as Director of Therapeutic Research. Since 1984 he has been the professor of analytical pharmacology at King’s College Hospital, London. Black died in London on March 22, 2010.
