George H. Hitchings (1905-1998)
Awarded the Prize “for his discoveries of important principles for drug treatment.”American pharmacologist. Hitchings was born on April 18, 1905 at Hoquiam, Washington. In 1927 he graduated from the University of Washington one year later he earned a ’s degree. In 1933 he obtained his Ph.D. at Harvard University. In 1967, he was offered the position of Vice President in Charge of Research of Burroughs Wellcome Co. He became Director of The Burroughs Wellcome Fund in 1968 its President in 1971. In 1983, he founded the Greater Triangle Community Foundation. Hitchings died on February 27, 1998 at Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
