Joseph E. Murray (1919- 2012)
Awarded the Prize “for his discoveries concerning Organ Cell Transplantation in the Treatment of Human Disease.”American surgeon. Murray was born on April 1, 1919 at Milford, Massachusetts. He graduated from Holy Cross College in 1940 took his M.D. from Harvard University in 1943. He worked at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, Boston, becoming chief plastic surgeon from 1964 to 1986, held a similar position at the Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Boston from 1972 to 1985. Since 1970 he serves as professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School. Murray died on 26 November 2012, in Boston, MA, USA.
