Edward B. Lewis (1918-2004)
Awarded the Prize “for his discoveries concerning the genetic control of early embryonic development.”American geneticist. Lewis was born on May 20, 1918 at Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. He gained his B.A. from the University of Minnesota in 1939. He received his Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology, where he was appointed the Professor of Biology in 1956, Thomas Hunt Morgan Professor of Biology in 1966. Lewis died on July 21, 2004 in Pasadena, California.
