Robert F. Furchgott (1916-2009)
Awarded the Prize “for his discoveries concerning nitric oxide as a signaling molecule in the cardiovascular system.”American pharmacologist. Furchgott was born on June 4, 1916 at Charleston, South Carolina. He received his B.S. at the University of North Carolina in 1937 his Ph.D. at Northwestern University in 1940. He was the Professor of Department of Pharmacology at the State University of New York from 1956 to 1988. Since 1988 he has been Distinguished Professor at the State University of New York Health Science Center Adjunct Professor of Department of Pharmacology at University of Miami, School of Medicine. Furchgott died in Seattle, Washington on May 19, 2009.
