Gunter Blobel (1936-2018)

Awarded the Prize “for the discovery that proteins have intrinsic signals that govern their transport localization in the cell.”

American cellular molecular biologist. Blobel was born on May 21, 1936 at Waltersdorf (now Niegoslawice, Pol). In 1967 he was awarded Ph.D. degree in oncology at the University of Wisconsin. Since 1976, he has been Professor at the Rockefeller University; since 1986 he has been Investigator at Howard Hughes Medical Institute; since 1992 he has been John D Rockefeller, Jr. Professor at the Rockefeller University. Blobel died on February 18, 2018 in New York City, New York, USA.
