Herbert C. Brown (1912-2004)
Awarded the Prize “for his development of the use of boron- phosphorus-containing compounds, respectively, into important reagents in organic synthesis.”American chemist. Brown was born in London on May 22, 1912. He entered the University of Chicago in 1935 where he obtained his doctorate in 1938. He then worked at Wayne University, from 1943 until 1947, when he moved to Purdue University, where he served as Professor of Inorganic Chemistry until his retirement in 1978. He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences the American Academy of Arts Sciences. Brown died in Lafayette, Indiana on December 19, 2004.
