Georg Wittig (1897-1987)

Awarded the Prize “for his development of the use of boron- phosphorus-containing compounds, respectively, into important reagents in organic synthesis.”

German chemist. Wittig was born in Berlin on June 16, 1897. He was graduated from the University of Tübingen. He received his doctorate in Marburg/Lahn taught there. In 1932 he became Head of Department at the Technical College of Braunschweig. From 1937 he was Associate Professor at Freiburg from 1944 he became Professor Faculty Director at the Institute of Chemistry, Tübingen. He accepted the position of professor at Heidelberg became Professor Emeritus since 1967. Wittig died in Heidelberg of Germany on August 26, 1987.
