Walter Gilbert (1932- )

Awarded the Prize “for his contributions concerning the determination of base sequences in nucleic acids.”

American molecular biologist. Gilbert was born in Boston, Massachusetts on March 21, 1932. He was educated at Harvard at Cambridge University, where he obtained his Ph.D. in physics in 1957. He returned to America to take up an appointment in theoretical physics at Harvard. He changed to molecular biology in 1960 in 1968 became Professor of Molecular Biology at Harvard.
