
Herbert A. Hauptman (1917-2011)
Awarded the Prize “for his outsting achievements in the development of direct methods for the determination of crystal structures.”American mathematician crystallographer. Hauptman was born on February 14, 1917 in New York City. He was educated at City College of New York graduated in 1937. He went to Columbia University received his M.A. in 1939 from the University of Maryl he obtained his Ph.D. in 1955. He became Professor of Biophysics at the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1970, from 1972 he was vice President the Director of the Medical Foundation of Buffalo. Hauptman died on October 23, 2011 in Buffalo, New York, USA.
