Walter Kohn (1923-2016)
Awarded the Prize “for his development of the density-functional theory.”American chemist. Kohn was born on March 9, 1923 in Vienna, Austria. He entered the University of Toronto where he gained his B.A. in 1945 M.A. in 1946. He was awarded Ph.D. at Harvard University in 1948. He once worked at Westinghouse Research Lab, Bell Telephone Labs, General Atomic IBM as Consultant. In 1950, he became Professor at Carnegie Mellon later was Professor at the University of California, San Diego. he was Professor of Physics, Emeritus Research Professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Kohn died on April 19, 2016 in Santa Barbara, California, USA.
