John A. Pople (1925-2004)
Awarded the Prize “for his development of computational methods in quantum chemistry.”British mathematician chemist. Pople was born at Burnham, Somerset, Engl on October 31, 1925. He was educated at the University of Cambridge, receiving his Ph.D. in mathematics in 1951. He was a fellow at Trinity College, Cambridge. In 1958 he headed the Basic Physics Division of the National Physical Laboratory. He was Professor at Carnegie-Mellon University also taught at Northwestern University. Pople died in Chicago, Illinois on March 15, 2004.
